INDIVIDUALITY

Harnessing Your
Creative Spirit

What is that elusive spark that makes great musicians, artist and poets ORIGINAL? In very simple terms, my observations and experiences tell me one simple truth. The Truth of individuality is that we already have it! Originality comes from a very deep sense of who and what I am, and my life purpose. There is no-one in the whole world exactly the same as you! Do you accept that?

It's true that we all share similar traits, qualities, skills, emotions and perceptions. Yet within this commonality there is the spark of uniqueness within. That is the "you" that makes you "you".

My theory is that rather than having to find our "voice" or individuality, we block it by absorbing ourselves too much in one or two of our "heroes". It's like having a whole lot of other people running around inside your head when you play! Where's the room for you to be yourself?

Yes, please pay homage to the greats of our instrument but be centred in the Self, ie. be clear what makes these people great. They followed their own star, whilst being totally motivated, inspired and enthused by players of the past and present. It's always a balance isn't it!!

We can't have individuality without the wonderful musical traditions of the past and recent times. We can't have freedom without discipline. That means you can't really throw away the rule book until you've mastered the whole rule book!!

Very simply in other words, discipline sets you free. It's worth making your foundation solid. The foundation needs to be there, then your explorations have structure and meaning.

Music is a communication. It is personal, interactive, dynamic, emotional, spiritual and a very powerful medium of influence. So be one of the leaders, not just a follower. A copy is always only a copy. It's worth developing that state of mind that refuses to be a second rate Weckl, Gadd, Donati or Jones (Philly Joe) etc.

An original means your personal best. MUSIC IS NOT A COMPETITION. It's a challenge to keep coming up with excellence and innovation. Sure, most things have been done before. (Look at the centuries of complex Indian drumming). But the way you do it will be unique to you. Ten drummers playing the same kit with the same stix, playing the same rhythm, will all sound incredibly different. Why? The intent behind and through your playing makes you sound a certain way. This is difficult to define. It is the essence, the soul, being expressed through sound, sight and vibration (your vibe and energy).

When we speak, our words are 7% of our communication, tone of voice is 38% and body language is 55% (the visual and vibe). I am sure that's why dynamic drumming is so appealing to a live audience. Similarly, when we speak on the kit, it's our whole "being" that is expressed - it's a language.

So make your communication strong, warm, relaxed, loving, clear and significant. Put yourself into new musical situations and create challenging sessions, sometimes just with one other player (bass or keyboard).

It's a gift!! Remember - music is not a competition, it's a contribution!!
