1999 "The rich emotional landscape on this, the second album by the breathtakingly talented Sydney trio, is beautifully captured on Hunters extraordinary piece Beat Your Wings as exhilarating and as draining as a double shot of caffeine and pseudoephedrine. Kevin Hunts keyboard surfs across the deep, warm molasses sound of Hunters bass and the creatively charged drumming of David Jones, which is a mix of simple time, insistently whispering brushwork, frenzied bursts and fills, and tantalising cross-rhythms. This then builds to the machine-gun guitar opening from guest soloist James Muller. Like the drumming of Jones, the music throughout this album twists and turns in unexpected directions, each development moving through or layering the other, the voices flowing in and out from different sources. Never allowed to settle, it transports the listener to surprising locations and can captivate when you least expect. A beautiful example is the tone colour on Joness Earth and Sky, almost four minutes of intriguing interplay between the beat and Japanese and Tibetan bowls. Or the meandering directions of Three Rivers. Or Hunters fascinating solos, where the bass seems to transmogrify into a piano. Shut your eyes, listen to the band building up the ideas in layers, and you hear echoes of Joe Zawinul." Leon Gettler The Melbourne Age |
