Projects

Here are some of the special projects that I am involved in, apart from all the freelance concerts, gigs, recordings and sessions that make up my musical career.

Colours of the Drum (solo)

Following my first release with ABC Classics (Meditations on Love) I am currently preparing a second CD package Colours of the Drum. I'm really excited about this new recording as it is solo drums and will contain 2 audio CDs plus a bonus DVD of some of the footage we shot in the studio sessions in May 2007.

Orchestral Drummer

I love playing with orchestras, and in the last 10 years I've been very honoured to have many wonderful opportunities, culminating in 2006 with a Drum Concerto being composed especially for me by Japan's Toshiyuki Watanabe.

Guesting with ...

I had the pleasure of playing with Deni Hines and James Morrison in Sept 2007 at Melbourne's Bennett's Lane club, as they introduced their new CD The Other Woman. Deni is a joy to play with.

Groove Ambience (with Evri)

In early 2006 when I returned from India, Evri and I played together to reconnect before playing some commercial shows. It was just an improvised session for ourselves, but something very special happened....

Light of the Moon

Light of the Moon perform a fusion of world/ folk and ambient groove sounds and rhythms, with musical layers from Tibetan and Japanese singing bowls, temple gongs, chimes and much more.

Music by Design

Experience 60 minutes of an inspired musical journey ... transcend the everyday and enter a place where every moment is timeless and inspired.

David Jones & Friends

This beautiful recording examines the state of love and unity using a wide variety of musicians and instrumentation. The recording of this album was facilitated by Brahma Kumari meditation techniques upon each of the themes.

DJs Drum

This project brings the drums "out the front" again, like Gene Krupa and Sandy Nelson did in the thirties and forties. I've composed heaps of pieces for this band. I workshopped extensively with the band members, and have written according to their strengths and specialised backgrounds.

David Jones Trio

I love this project because it's so immediate, in-the-moment and on the edge, with no safety net. Each set is one whole improvised piece, with no pre-planning or even discussion about concepts. The only discussion happens at the beginning of the set, with a challenge and invitation for the audience to "co-create" with us. Let's face it, if the vibe's not happening, the music is not going to sparkle. So the theme of the David Jones Trio is to surprise the audience with different concepts and different compositions and material.

Tree

Tree took root in 1994, and is a trio of Kevin Hunt (keyboards), Steve Hunter (bass) and me on kit. I first played with Steve in a band called Playdiem which released a self-titled album.

AtmaSphere

I put AtmaSphere together in 1991 to start playing music that centred around polyrhythms. Daryl Pratt (vibraphone and effects), Adam Armstrong (electric and acoustic bass) and Dev Gopalasamy formed the original band. Then in 1991 I changed the emphasis of the band by adding Carmen Warrington's spoken word.

Sam McNally

What can I say about my dear friend Sam? He is one of the most dedicated, hard-working musicians I know. He is extremely passionate about producing high quality recordings and live shows. His background is so extensive that I’d need to devote another whole website to him!
